Protocol Correction: 2026 Obstetrics – Hemorrhagic Shock

A medication dosing error has been identified in the 2026 Obstetrics: Hemorrhagic Shock Protocol. The protocol currently states:

"‡ 10 units IM or 10 units IV followed by 20 units placed in 1 L normal saline and given wide open until bleeding significantly decreases."

This is incorrect and must be revised.

Administration of 10 units of oxytocin as an IV bolus is contraindicated due to the risk of severe cardiovascular adverse effects, including hypotension, arrhythmias, and cardiovascular collapse. Under no circumstances should 10 units of oxytocin be administered as an IV push.

The protocol should be corrected to read:

"‡ 10 units IM followed by 20 units placed in 1 L normal saline and given wide open until bleeding significantly decreases."

Please ensure all personnel are aware of this correction and update any local copies of the protocol accordingly.
