The New York State Department of Health and the NYC Health Department have released guidance about acetaminophen (Tylenol®) being a safe and recommended pain reliever and fever reducer during pregnancy when used as directed.
Clinicians should continue to recommend acetaminophen when medically indicated, and pregnant patients should consult with their healthcare providers before medication use.Â
In the released guidance, the NYS Department of Health points out that NSAIDs like ibuprofen carry known risks, including miscarriage, stillbirth, and developmental complications. The advisory also warns that untreated pain or fever can harm both the pregnant person and the baby.
